Indulging in Cakes and Pies at Anchor, Batam

I am a firm believer of the phrase: "There is always a space for desserts" <3
Give me dessert and I am sold! Like how to say no to such a delish and beautiful creations?

After not coming back to my hometown for months, I was welcomed with a pleasant surprised that there are so many cafe-cum-cakery that have opened with nice ambiance and delicious cakes. So, I made it a point to myself that I need to try as many of these as possible!

That brought my friends and I to *drum rolling* Anchor Cafe & Roastery at Dermaga

Apparently, this place is pretty well-known and quite of people's favorites. It is owned by this man who we are guessing is an American, from his accent, but we might be wrong.

My first impression of this cafe the time I came in was "Such a nice place! I like all corners of this place!". I never really fond of places that are crowded as I feel like my personal space is being invaded, but some way some how, Anchor does not give this feeling!

I like how they placed all the seating in a way that it is not too closed from one another, but not too far to the point that it feels empty, such a well-designed and organised cafe. *claps*

Instead of going with the conventional way of showcasing the desserts, they went with the above. I kind of like this because it gives a more western and classic feelings to it. What do you think? The counter is not too spacious but it is just so nice and cute! You can right away see most of the dessertsoptions here as well. However, you can always take a seat first and choose the cake options from the menu.

The owner, himself, took our orders and he was there to provide us with some recommendations if we are first-timers. He recommended most of the pies and cakes below, except for the key lime pie but I was in for a good sourish taste so I must order that!

I would say that the cakes and pies are considered quite pricey (in comparison to other cafes in the city) but they are all really decent and worth a try!

Now, what is my verdict on the cakes? (Starting from my most favorite to the least)

1. Key lime pie

Crispy crust with refreshing-lime-custard! I love this so very much that it comes as my most favorite! I, seriously, enjoyed this one the most because it does not give you that sickening taste and I can finish all without a doubt! I will definitely order this again the next time I visit Anchor.

2. Cheesecake with berries on top

This is my second favorite, I always prefer the cheesy and sourish taste in comparison to the chocolaty or creamy ones. So, cheesecake has always been a must order for me. As we know that cheese is of course cheesy and most of the time creamy, the berries provide a glimpse of fresh taste that balances both flavors. It was not too creamy or sourish so it is good for those who dislike sourish-yogurt-like-taste.

3. Carrot Cake

For Asians, this dish does cause misunderstanding cause it has the same name as the usual Chinese dish that we often find in Chinese restaurants or hawkers. But, I am actually quite a fan of Carrot Cake (not the Chinese dish) as I have tried a real good one previously. For Anchor's Carrot Cake, it is pretty huge in size and we really enjoyed the cream. However, it is a little bit too dry for my liking and would prefer it to be moister than this.

4. Pumpkin Pie

For your record, I am being biased here cause I am not a fan of pumpkin. But for most of the people, this would taste better than the carrot cake. It has a soft custard but it is a little too bland for me. I guess, it will take some time until I can appreciate the goodness of a pumpkin pie.

However, I was told that if paired with creamy ice cream or a whipped-cream, this would be a too die for dessert! Maybe I should try that next time?

Now, let me show you a happy face that appearred after I indulged myself with cakes!

I think I looked happy!

In overall, Anchor is a really good place for a hang out with your friends. The staffs are friendly and helpful (even after we spilled our drinks and talked like the world is ours). The desserts are good and they sell main dishes too which all look pretty good but I haven't had the chance to try, but will definitely do so next time!
